Pages of the Sea, Porthmeor

General call to action

As the tide came in the portrait and silhouettes were washed away and there was a moment of remembrance.

On the 11th November 2018 people gathered at beaches across the UK to mark the centenary of Armistice Day with a project called Pages of the Sea created by Oscar winning film director Danny Boyle.

We were delighted to have been asked to produce the St Ives event at Porthmeor Beach, creating a portrait of Captain Edward Hain.

Our activities including a local community choir, collection of family memories of WWI, pebble commemorations for fallen soldiers or loved ones and stencils.

Pages of the Sea was centred around the drawings of a large-scale portrait in the sand, some 30m. The portraits of casualties from the First World War. Members of the public on the beaches had opportunity to join in and use a template to create silhouettes of soldiers in the sand, remembering the millions of lives lost or changed forever by the conflict As the tide came in the portrait and silhouettes were washed away and there was a moment of remembrance.
